“Policymakers and health officials should not rely on warmer temperatures to save us from COVID-19,” Bollyky, of the Council on Foreign Relations, says. Others agree that officials must not be complacent as the summer months approach. He says that as it adapted to the human population, it adopted a seasonal pattern, with most infections now occurring during the winter months. He points to the 2009 outbreak of the H1N1 virus, otherwise known as swine flu, which began in April of that year. “There is a risk that it may end up becoming a seasonal virus without global concerted public health interventions to prevent spread.” “If we continue to see sustained transmission in multiple countries, it will be very difficult to eradicate the virus,” says Charles Chiu, a professor of laboratory medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. MERS does not show any sign of being seasonal.” “Past coronavirus outbreaks, SARS and MERS, haven’t really exhibited clear evidence of being seasonal,” Bollyky says.”The SARS outbreak did end in July, but it is not clear that weather. Looking at two other deadly members of the coronavirus family, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), could, Bollyky says, help us understand how COVID-19 may act in the summer heat. “Rate of virus spread, effectiveness of infection control practices, weather and human immunity will likely all play a role in determining its future,” she says.Īdditionally, because COVID-19 is so new, “there is no natural immunity in the population and thus all bets are off,” says John Nicholls of the University of Hong Kong. McGraw, of Penn State University, says there will likely be many factors that determine when and how the outbreak ends. Other health experts that TIME spoke to agree that it’s too early to say if warmer weather will impact the virus’s spread. “We haven’t been through even a single year with this pathogen.” “I think it’s premature to assume that,” she said during a call with reporters on Feb. Nancy Messionnier of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned against assuming the number of cases will slow as the weather warms. The common cold is most prevalent in the winter and spring, and influenza is most common during the fall and winter in the U.S., with flu activity peaking between December and February, according to the CDC.īut health experts aren’t so sure that COVID-19, which has infected more than 83,000 people since officials first discovered the disease in December, can be stopped by the onset of summer.ĭr. If you should experience a hardware failure no utility is going to be of any help and the hardware diagnosis included in some utilities is of minimal value in the Real World. The most I had to do was a little hand-holding during major OS upgrades but if I hadn't been around he could have easily handled that himself. In the following seven years and two Mac upgrades ( a 20" G5 iMac and 24" Aluminum Intel iMac) he never had a computer emergency nor even a serious tech support issue. My friend used his computer for several hours every day doing a variety of things, not just e-mail and Web surfing. Unlike a lot of people, he actually bought the book and read it. During a total of approximately four hours I set-up his hardware, showed him the basics while encouraging him to become familiar with online tech support resources and purchase David Pogue's "Missing Manual" for OS X. Much of what I do is initial set-up and basic training, and I figure that I have done my job if I never hear from someone again.įor example, I helped a 70 year old man who had never even used a typewriter get started with a G3 iMac. Most of the Mac users that I deal with don't have the kinds of crises that you are concerned about. Disk Utility and a Unix maintenance program like the free Onyx is all I use. It can find and fix directory problems that Apple's Disk Utility cannot and I have seen it resurrect seemingly stone cold dead drives. And both utilities can cause problems on a Mac.ĭisk Warrior is the only utility that I think is truly deserving of a place in my "emergency" software folder. I cannot recall the last time that I had a need for something like TTP or Drive Genius. If you are like me and 99% of my clients you will never have a need for any of the utilities you mentioned. Jai, I do Mac tech support as well as photography. Incidentally, apple includes tech tool if you buy applecare, but I've never once received the correct version with any applecare I've bought. I agree that DW is good to have in case of emergency, but none of them are necessary on a day to day basis. Macs don't require constant maintenance and surveillance, for all that many switchers like to feel that they are helping things along with these programs. I've owned macs since 1995 and have never used any of those never needed them. Thanks for the AppleCare / TechTool tip - was not aware of this ! Your experience is similar to mine and perhaps with others as well that "things" normally don't fall apart on the Mac, but for reasons explained, I would prefer to maintain the comp myself as much as possible. The main reason is that I live in the part of the world where Mac are not completely rare, but rare enough - One has to "find" Apple/Mac specialists/repair shops and from this perspective I feel its better that I arm myself with the appropriate tools in the event when "things" go wrong. You have understood the situation well - Yes, perhaps I am a little more concerned than others. “Christmas is a day of meaning and traditions, a special day spent in the warm circle of family and friends.”įunny Christmas Instagram Captions The best part of social media is when it makes us smile.“A silent night, a star above, a blessed gift of hope and love.“Christmas will always be as long as we stand heart to heart and hand in hand.”.“Keep Calm and Have a Merry Christmas.”.“Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!”.“The Best Way to Spread Christmas Cheer is to Sing Loud for All to Hear.”.“Have yourself a Merry little Christmas.”.To make things easier, you can also connect your Instagram account to your Shutterfly account and use the photos you’ve uploaded to Instagram in your Christmas card this year. However, the TiVo encrypts your show with your Mac, making it unreadable, so it's rather complicated and tedious to move live video recordings directly from Tivo to Mac (including Tivo Roamio, Premiere, HD, S3 or S2 devices), especially for the unsupported Tivo files by iTunes on MacOS High Sierra 10.13 (such as MKV, AVI, VOB, MPG, TiVo, etc.), then what things can do the job to stream Tivo recording file to Mac as well as the convenience of Tivo time-shift recording highlights? Consequently, with the increasing numbers of Tivo users, the Mac users like you appeal to downloading live movies and TV shows from Tivo and transfer the video recordings to Mac, because when you got some TiVo recordings you found interesting and valuable, you can also watch these TiVo files on portable devices and media players, save them to DVD, or transfer TiVo files to Apple TV via iTunes for watching. This schema change enables the Active Directory connector to use supported mobile device management (MDM) solutions."Tivo is watching when you don't watch, and it tattles" make our daily TV shows watching more and more flexiable. For example, the Active Directory schema could be changed using Windows administration tools to include macOS managed client attributes. LDAP for access and Kerberos for authentication: The Active Directory connector does not use Microsoft’s proprietary Active Directory Services Interface (ADSI) to get directory or authentication services.ĭetection of and access to extended schema: If the Active Directory schema has been extended to include macOS record types (object classes) and attributes, the Active Directory connector detects and accesses them. (The user also has a network home folder as specified in the user’s Active Directory account.) See Set up mobile user accounts. Using the Finder, the user can then copy files between the Windows home folder network volume and the local Mac home folder.Ĭreation of mobile accounts for users: A mobile account has a local home folder on the startup volume of the Mac. In this case, the connector also mounts the user’s Windows network home folder (specified in the Active Directory user account) as a network volume, like a share point. Using a local home folder on the Mac: You can configure the connector to create a local home folder on the startup volume of the Mac. You can specify whether to use the network home specified by Active Directory’s standard home directory attribute or by the home directory attribute of macOS (if the Active Directory schema is extended to include it). Mounting of Windows home folders: When someone logs in to a Mac using an Active Directory user account, the Active Directory connector can mount the Windows network home folder specified in the Active Directory user account as the user’s home folder. See Control authentication from all domains in the Active Directory forest. Alternatively, you can permit only specific domains to be authenticated on the client. If a domain controller becomes unavailable, the connector uses another nearby domain controller.ĭiscovery of all domains in an Active Directory forest: You can configure the connector to permit users from any domain in the forest to authenticate on a Mac computer. See Map the group ID, Primary GID, and UID to an Active Directory attribute.Īctive Directory replication and failover: The Active Directory connector discovers multiple domain controllers and determines the closest one. The generated user ID and primary group ID are the same for each user account, even if the account is used to log in to different Mac computers. The packet encryption and packet signing options ensure all data to and from the Active Directory domain for record lookups is protected.ĭynamic generation of unique IDs: The controller generates a unique user ID and a primary group ID based on the user account’s globally unique ID (GUID) in the Active Directory domain. Packet encryption and packet-signing options for all Windows Active Directory domains: This functionality is on by default as “allow.” You can change the default setting to disabled or required by using the dsconfigad command. In addition to supporting authentication policies, the Active Directory connector also supports the following: Therefore, it might be necessary to change the ACL of those attributes to permit computer groups to read these added attributes. Tip: Mac clients assume full read access to attributes that are added to the directory. Release the left mouse button between strokes. I lost a lot of sales because I didn’t order enough product. I thought I was a little aggressive with my projections, but they ended up being quite conservative. My first challenge was when I launched my first youth product. What challenges did you face? How did you overcome these? This was incredibly useful as a quick reference to maximize the amount of people my advertising reached in each product segment. In addition, I created my own resource by making an excel spreadsheet that multiplied the reach of the different advertising channels per dollar by the percentage of each segment that used the different channels. I relied on information I had gained from previous marketing courses I had taken, and like I mentioned before, the manual was a critical resource to my success. What resources did you pull on to develop your winning strategy which led you to the top of your course and then top in the Hall of Fame? It really helped me get a better idea of how it all connected. When I didn’t fully understand how a part of the simulation worked, like salesforce management for instance, I would play with different numbers in the single player mode. In addition to that, practicing in the single player simulation gives instant feedback on how different decisions affect growth in the industry. At first, I just read the quick guide, but when I decided to read the full manual, my growth escalated rapidly. Reading the manual is critical to understanding the market in this simulation. How did you familiarize yourself with the simulation? By studying the statistics and graphs in the manual, I was able to determine how much of the budget to allocate to both of these categories, and customize the distribution of funds going to the different channels within advertising and sales promotion. I focused the majority of my budget on advertising and sales promotion. How did you begin implementing that strategy? I also knew I needed to launch a youth focused product before a sports focused product because early in the simulation, the standard product is able to capture some of the sports segment, but it doesn’t capture any of the youth segment. I wanted to gain as much of the market share as I could, as quickly as I could, because I figured it would be more difficult to gain market share as time went on. Going into the simulation, my strategy was to increase awareness of my products as much as possible. What was your strategy going into the simulation? By making fewer changes, I was able to reduce variability and know more precisely which changes were affecting my growth. From there, I would typically make one or two changes per product each year. It was critical to gather as much information as I could so I could see which decisions were the most successful, and which areas of my strategy required revision. My decision making process began by analyzing the market from the previous year, comparing growth of all the companies in my world, and studying as much as I could about the industry. What is your decision making process within the simulation? The Smartsims team reached out and interviewed Logun to speak on his experiences, the lessons he learned and advice he would give future students. He landed 10th place in the Music2Go Multi-Player (All Time) Hall of Fame. This week, we’re featuring one of the latest Hall of Fame entrants, Logun Williamson from the University of Utah. For that reason, there appeared such functions as “Link Fault Pass-through” and “Far End Fault”.įig. That may sound rather simple, however, when used together, such “cable” actually comprises two copper cables and two fiber optic cables (see Fig. Basically, a media converter must “simulate” a cable. The converter must remain invisible to network devices. Needless to say, that the basic role of a media converter lies in data transfer between two devices that can’t be connected to each other directly. This is true, however, modern media converters also support the functions that, if applied correctly, can enhance network reliability. One might think, that the sole purpose of a media converter is to convert a signal from one transfer medium (copper wire) to the other (optical fiber). This article includes recommendations on application and choosing media converters, operation principles of “Link Fault Pass-through” and “Far End Fault” functions, as well as converters behaviour in redundant networks.
